School Sustainability Grant Opportunities

Many school sustainability initiatives could benefit from an extra boost of funding, either to get things off the ground or maintain current projects. Below, we have compiled a list of grants that provide financial support to a range of environmental education programs seeking to foster the next generation of environmental stewards. Continue reading to find a grant that your school or Green Team could qualify for!

 Grants Currently Accepting Applications:

GroMoreGrassroots Grant

  • Deadline: February 4, 2022
  • Provides $500 grants to programs to start or expand their youth garden or greenspace

President's Environmental Youth Award

  • Deadline: February 18, 2022
  • Honors projects developed by students and student classes or clubs that promote environmental awareness and action in schools

President's Innovation Award for Environmental Educators

  • Deadline: February 18, 2022
  • Recognizes K-12 educators who utilize innovative approaches to environmental education with a $2,500 award to support their professional development

Washington Native Plant Society Education Grant

  • Deadline: March 1, 2022
  • Provides $300 - $1,500 grants to fund projects that educate the public about native plants in Washington

Chrysalis Fund

  • Deadline: June 1, 2022
  • Grants ranging from $500 - $2,500 for programs that teach students about insect science

Watershed Alliance Neighborhood Grants

  • Accepts applications on a rolling basis until all funds are awarded for the year
  • Provides grants typically between $1,000 - $2,000 for community-based environmental projects in the City of Vancouver

Bonnie Plants 3rd Grade Cabbage Program

  • Provides free mega-cabbage plants to 3rd grade classrooms. Students grow the cabbages and submit pictures and measurements of their harvest to be considered for a $1,000 scholarship.

Garden Grant Program

  • Opens February 14, 2022
  • $3,000 grant to support a new or existing edible educational garden at a K-12 school

Food Waste Warrior Grants

  • Opens June 1, 2022
  • Offers mini-grants and large grants to empower teachers and administrators in all schools to engage their students and take action on the issue of food waste

Seeds for Education

  • Opens July 2022
  • $100 - $500 native garden grants for plants and seeds

No Child Left Inside Grant

  • Opens August 10, 2022
  • Up to $150,000 grants that provide under-served youth with quality opportunities to experience the natural world

The Bee Grant

  • Opens September 2022
  • Choice between a monetary or equipment grant to support schools in bringing educational beehives to their campus to teach students about the role pollinators play in our food system

Green Apple Day of Service

  • Register your sustainability project by the end of the school year and be eligible to receive up to $200 in mini-grant funding

Teaching Gardens Network Grant

  • Opens September 2022
  • Awards $2,500 grants to support school gardens

Green Ribbon Schools

  • Opens September 2022
  • Celebrates schools and districts committed to reducing environmental impacts, improving the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff, and providing effective environmental education

USDA Farm to School Grant

  • Opens October 2022
  • Funds projects that help to provide more local food in schools, build school gardens, and introduce students to careers in agriculture

EPA Environmental Education Grants

  • Opens October 2022
  • Distributes over $2 million annually, supporting more than 3,800 projects that promote environmental awareness and stewardship

Adopt-A-School Program

  • Opens November 2022
  • $500 grants for stormwater education including bus transportation for field trips to wastewater treatment facilities
