Healthy School Buildings: Safer Science Labs

Do you know the environmental and health impacts of the chemicals in your classroom? In schools across Clark County, there is a wide range of science-based learning that goes on each day. Safety is paramount, and this applies to the handling of various chemicals in and out of the lab. Clark County Green Schools has some resources to help you get started and maybe even become a certified Washington Green School for your efforts!

As part of Washington Green School's Healthy School Building certification, schools can, among other things, work towards safer use and storage of chemicals in science labs. A good first step is to take an inventory of all the chemicals that are currently stored in your school's labs. King County's local hazardous waste management program has a "Rehab the Lab" page , with many resources to help you with every step as you create safer laboratories, storage spaces, and classrooms. King County also has a searchable database for chemical compounds used in school laboratories, art rooms, and custodial storage, with detailed information regarding potential hazards, use in the classroom, and disposal methods that help protect human health and the environment. Check out links to all these resources on the Clark County Green Schools website

Washington Department of Ecology is partnering with Beyond Benign a local training opportunity to help high school science teachers foster safer and "greener" science labs. The Sustainable Science and Green Chemistry Workshop will take place at Camas High School June 22nd. If you are looking for more training, online courses are offered in June and July. Ecology will pay half of the registration cost and participants can earn up to 48 STEM clock hours. Check out all the details below!
