La Center High School’s Environmental Legacy

La Center High School likes to lead the Green Schools charge and has once again achieved something no other school has. They are the only public high school to reach Platinum level with Washington Green Schools and re-certify in all six categories.

At the recent recognition ceremony where La Center received their re-certification award, Ms. Morris invited many alumni from the program to share in the celebration. It was especially evident how impactful this program has been for students and the lasting change it has left on them and their community. The long line of current and past students, along with staff involved was impressive. It was evident that the efforts at La Center High School involve the community and not just a few select students. That culture of environmental passion permeates the school.

In addition to all the projects they completed to re-certify, La Center High School also mentored students at La Center Elementary School, sharing their knowledge with over 50 5th graders a few times a month. This commitment contributes to the cycle of learning and leadership in the La Center community.

The La Center program is robust, mixing in students from the Environmental Studies class, Imagine Tomorrow team, Earth Day Extravaganza team, Small engines and other classes through the shop program. Ms. Morris and Mr. Neiman both dedicate a tremendous amount of time, energy, mentoring and leadership to their programs and students.

La Center High School's intentionality to re-certify shows diligence to keeping past projects going, while also continuing to pursue new areas of change.

Hear from some La Center High School graduates on how the environmental programs effected their lives:

Our green team has accomplished a lot, even in the 3 years I was a part of it...from Earth Day Extravaganza to the Environmental Studies Class, growing food for the cafeteria to improving our school recycling program to include the district offices. It takes not only a team, but it takes a family to accomplish what we have done.

Project Study changed me and many others who aspired to help. It's an opportunity to make a real difference in our community and ourselves.

Being in the class has taught me so much about the environment and how much we can make a difference. Ms. Morris was a great teacher and person and I learned so much from her.

I was a part of Project Study for three years. Being with Ms. Morris has changed my life, my outlook of the environment and my actions towards the community. I love being a part of something huge. I thank Ms. Morris for everything she has done for me, the environment and everyone she has come into contact with.
