By: Ellen Ives

After eight years working as the schools educator with Waste Connections, my last day in this job will be November 4th. Rest assured, a person will be hired in my place.

The time we've spent together through these years, discovering, and learning of the impact that we humans have on the health of the planet that supports our lives, has been worthwhile and essential. I deeply appreciate the time, effort, energy, and creativity you and your students have put forth to raise awareness and lead others to facilitate the changes so desperately needed.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Margaret Mead, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." However, it has become evident that this small, thoughtful, hardworking group needs visible support from superintendents, administrators, teachers, staff –each and every person in your school community. I strongly urge you to push for this support.

Know that I will continue doing this work forever and for always, just in a different format. I also will be developing relationships with and periodically caring for our young grandchildren here in Vancouver.

A message from Clark County Green Schools:

Ellen's impact on the Clark County Green Schools community has been immeasurable. She has worked to educate thousands of students across Clark County over the last eight years. In all aspects of her position she aimed to mentor the next generation of environmental leaders. Her years spent guiding students through waste audits, teaching lessons about sustainability, educating students in the cafeteria about waste sorting have inspired young minds across the county.

Her impact on the community has stretched far beyond just her colleges at Waste Connections, and her coworkers across partner agencies such as Clark County Green Schools and EarthGen. She will surely be missed by students, teachers, administration and custodial staff across the county.

We are excited for Ellen to embark on her new adventure caring for her grandchildren!
